Achieving an ecosystem approach to fisheries management in the Baltic Sea

The Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is the European Union's instrument for the management of fisheries and aquaculture. According to EU, CFP shall ensure sustainable exploitation of living aquatic resources.

Furthermore, a precautionary approach to protect and conserve living aquatic resources shall be applied, and the impact of fishing activities on marine ecosystems shall be minimized. Despite of these promising words, many fish stocks in the EU territory waters are overfished.

In the study “Achieving an ecosystem approach to fisheries management in the Baltic Sea: relevance of Member States” delegated powers under the CFP and their nature conservation duties, the law of the sea, the ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM) as well as the nature conservation duties of the member states were investigated. The result is presented in the report (to the right).
