BalticSea2020s contribution of BalticSea2020s to the reform of the IRPP BREF (intensive pig and poultry production), was well received by Serge Roudier, the Head of the European IPPC Bureau, who in a letter expressed his gratitude towards the foundation.

To reduce the impact of the manure on the Baltic Sea, BalticSea2020 has initiated a 10-year program to develop methods and technologies for optimal handling of large amounts of manure. The goal is to eventually construct a demonstration plant that shows a cycle that benefits everyone involved - the residents around the Baltic Sea, the farmers and our environment.

This spring, the Technical Working Group for industrial pig and poultry production evaluated which techniques should be recommended in the latest version of the” steering document for intensive pig and poultry production (IED IRPP BREF). This evaluation is important because the techniques listed in the policy document puts the limit for the amount of emissions of pollutants (such as nitrogen and phosphorus) for intensive pig farms in the future.

BalticSea2020 has sent at letter to the DG Environment, IPPC Bureau and to the representatives in the working group for the Baltic Sea States, in which the Foundation emphasizes the importance of evaluation techniques considering the ability to reduce leaching of nutrients into the water.

This week BalticSea2020 got an answer from Serge Roudier, head of the unit that manages and coordinates the audit at the European IPPC Bureau, who appreciate the Foundation’s commitment and valuable input to the revise of the IED BREF IRPP, and declares that the discharge of nutrients will be a key issue in the revise and that the proposed technologies are noted. Serge Roudiers comments:

"We take note of your proposal to include in the BAT assessment process the manure treatment techniques identified in BalticSea2020 ''Intensive Pig Production Program''. We are aware of the fine publications that have been issued by BalticSea2020, one of which is already referenced in the draft of the revised BREF. (...) Thank you again very much for your cooperation and input in the review of the IRPP BREF".
