Fishery: The European Commission’s proposal on fishing in the Baltic Sea

Last Wednesday the European Commission presented their annual proposal on fishing opportunities in the Baltic Sea. The proposal indicates the amount of fish that EU fishermen can catch during 2016 and concerns the Baltic Sea’s 10 main commercial fish stocks.

The commission suggests that the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for Eastern Baltic cod should be decreased by 20 % compared to 2015. Data shows that the Western cod stocks are overfished and below sustainable biological limits, but the commission awaits further data to analyze and has not yet a proposal for quotas for this stock.

The TAC for sprat has also been proposed to be decreased by the commission. More precisely with 14 %.

Therefore, the Foundation worked to ensure that the environmental effects of fishing should be a central part of the EU's Common Fisheries Policy. The Foundation also worked on projects to increase the proportion of predatory fish, such as cod, pike and perch. Read more

eutroEutrophication is caused by emissions of nutrients that come from e.g. agriculture, water treatment plants, sewage and transportation. To find measures that could reduce emissions the Foundation worked on projects in agriculture, industrial animal farms and the coastal zone, to research on measures to catch or bind nutrients. Read more

The Foundation has also supported Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre (Baltic Eye), and Baltic Sea Science Center at Skansen. Read more
