The role of the EU nitrates water framework and proposed marine strategy directives in reducing nutrient pollution from agriculture to the Baltic Sea

Nutrients entering the Baltic Sea derive from a number of sources, the most important being the diffuse sources.

The diffuse sources are principally agricultural, but also include some urban run-off. Under EU law there are a number of legislative mechanisms available to control diffuse nutrient pollution.
